Queens of Colour 2~Zandra Rhodes
26 July 2007
2nd in my micro-series [i think micro is my new favourite word] is Zandra Rhodes.
Zandra Rhodes is an English fashion designer from the 70s, usually described as being inspired by textiles though i can’t imagine that colour isn’t a factor. colour is definitely a factor. Zandra not only dresses in her designs but like her designs her own hair and makeup are dyed, patterned, gilded, decorous & fantastical. i don’t know what to call her style- haute punk? punk luxe?
i found the most interesting collection of Zandra Rhodes images on LiveJournal. you might need an LJ account to see those.
i had a run in with her in the early 90s. i was doing a show in tokyo. it was unusual because i was 1 of only 2 non-japanese models in the show. so for the 1st time i saw how disciplined and different their approach was. and how readily they feel asleep sitting up [on their breaks of course]. it was held in a building with an all glass facade, and the entire interior was a sort of cement mazelike ramped walkway divided by streams of waterlilies. AND the whole show was traditional kimonos. so this situation was a serious challenge for me. and each time i walked, there at the very top, in full regalia was Zandra Rhodes. we were also on the same level as the audience. which i always hated. it made me so nervous. anyway, she was striking. and i survived.
